Look what I found:

The following statement appeared in an agricultural bulletin in 1928, about 20 years after it was first introduced in Florida as a forage crop. "Kudzu is not without disadvantages. It is slow and expensive in getting established, is exacting in requiring only moderate grazing and mowing, is deceptive about its real yield, especially to those who do not know it well, and sometimes becomes a pest.

I would point three things out. 1. Apparently, not active enough, 2. Mr. Johnston brought this on himself by telling them, and, yes, 3. It IS always difficult when you're sitting a neighbor's dog and an alligator eats it. Always.

Point 3. is just so true!

Referring to the news story of another dog-meets-alligator incident, Steve H. at Hog On Ice points out that Florida's alligator plague continues. Although it's indisputable that Florida has more than a few alligators around, oddly enough I've never seen one in the wild. Maybe I need to get out more.

I see over at Scribal Terror that another imported species is threatening Florida's turf. Someone has to respond so I've been working on my new business plan.

1. Capture Burmese pythons.

3. Make lots of money.

Needs work but I'm getting there.

The genius in my plan rests in step 1, capturing the snakes. I plan to feed them giant African rats, then when they're full and really slow, game over. Grab 'em, throw 'em in a croker sack and Presto! Gots me some pythons.

Step 2 is a bit more complicated. Suggestions welcome.

Home early, for a change. Okay, less late. The Daily Birdcage Bottom was on time for a change, which makes my day a bit easier.

Mommy Deerest was out this morning, she and her two babies, although not in one of her usual places. I was surprised to see them, especially since they were in the road. Mostly they hang out along the edges of the golf courses, or in one of the greenscape areas, but not this morning. I always slow way down and poke along past them, and it's not unusual for them to decide to cross the road in front of me, but it's most unusual to find them actually in the road.

I've named her Mommy Deerest because I can pick her out of the herd, and because her two fawns are evidence of her superior mothering skills. Fat and sassy they are.

The rest of the bunch I call collectively "the girls," since I can't distinguish one from the other, six more lady deers and one fawn, usually together with Mommy Deerest and her two, but sometimes in smaller groups.

I hardly ever see "The Boys," as I call the four male deer that hang out in the same general area, and then only in the late Fall, early Winter. Long about now, come to think of it. Maybe they're actually reindeer and they've been in training with Santa. Or maybe they're just shy. Who knows? They're deer.

Well, I had something poignant to write about this morning, but I sat down here and decided that first I'd go and check out the happenings at Hog On Ice.

But I've been watching. Both. It's like an accident on the interstate. I don't really want to look, but... it's sort of a topic of interest for some of my favorite bloggers.

For me, camo flamingos do the trick. Put a whole herd of 'em out front of the double-wide. At Christmas just add a sleigh and you're done. No huhu.

Here at the kudzu farm desert camo works best, as the forest green pattern tends to blend into the vines.

Or maybe that's mailing it in.

Naming Names

In a previous post, Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing, I linked to a post about strange names parents bestow on their offspring. As it happens, one of my favorite bloggers has made this a regular feature. It's funny and entertaining on one level and tragic on another, as Tanker at Mostly Cajun points out in this post.

Names, like appearance, are an important component of first impressions. What can today's parents be thinking when they name the kiddies such off the wall creations?

I dunno, it seems to be a trend that is accelerating, so maybe, by the time these kids grow to the age of employment, it won't be a handicap to be LaMarcus Desiderata[1] or some such. And a lot of traditionalists such as myself will have retired or croaked. Who knows? Madisyn LaShauwn Smithers, Director of Human Resources, might not even notice.

There's nothing worse than taking out a new conundrum and then not using it.
